Process
MARLINSPIKE applies a staged approach to all commissions. Work progresses through defined phases, each with clear purpose and outcome.
This structure supports clarity early and confidence through delivery.
Staged Commissioning
All projects are structured across three stages. Each stage is confirmed before proceeding to the next.
Stage 1
Concept Development
Every commission begins with a paid concept phase.
This stage establishes:
- Intent and narrative direction
- Spatial and material logic
- Feasibility within the anticipated scope
Concept development forms the foundation for all subsequent work. It ensures alignment before cost and construction are committed.
Fabrication is not quoted until this stage is complete.
Stage 2
Design Development
Where required, the confirmed concept is developed further to support engineering, coordination, or delivery.
This stage may include:
- Design refinement and detailing
- Engineering input and validation
- Material testing or prototyping
- Coordination with consultants
Design development reduces uncertainty and supports informed decisions before fabrication proceeds.
Stage 3
Fabrication and Installation
Once the design is confirmed, the project moves into production.
This stage includes:
- Fabrication planning and sequencing
- Material procurement and finishing
- Quality control
- Site coordination and installation
Throughout delivery, conceptual intent is maintained alongside practical requirements.
Engagement
Commissions begin with a conversation about the project, its context, and whether there is alignment around intent and process.
Fees are discussed once the scope and nature of the work are understood.
Process enables clarity. Structure supports outcome.
