The Walk
A commissioned sculptural work integrated into the lobby of a new multi-purpose building at Emmaus College. Developed as a linear sequence aligned with circulation, THE WALK uses material progression and spatial rhythm to support movement, reflection, and long-term use.
Project Context
The lobby of the Main Administration Building at Emmaus College is a high-volume circulation space. Used daily by students, staff, and visitors, it functions as the primary arrival point for the campus.
The work was commissioned to support the school's philosophical foundation while remaining appropriate to a busy interior environment. The narrative draws from the journey to Emmaus, understood as movement through space and awareness.
Spatial Strategy
The sculpture is conceived as a linear sequence aligned with circulation through the lobby. It unfolds gradually as people move alongside it.
Placement along the lobby wall preserves clear movement paths while establishing a continuous visual presence. The work is read sequentially rather than as a single focal object.

Material Resolution
The work is constructed from glass and aluminium within a controlled depth of 100mm, selected for durability, safety, and long-term stability.
Triangular aluminium elements trace a west-northwest alignment. Tonal values shift from darker to lighter hues across the sequence.
All edges are resolved for a student environment. The work has required no maintenance since installation.

Integration and Use
- Daily circulation patterns and peak movement times
- Sightlines from multiple entry points
- Safety and accessibility requirements
- Long-term maintenance by school facilities staff
Outcome
The Walk remains integrated within the life of the building. It supports spatial identity through continuity and material clarity.
The project established a working relationship that led to further commissioned work at the same site.
