Work

MARLINSPIKE develops integrated sculptural systems for architecture and the built environment.

Projects are shaped through close collaboration with architects, designers, engineers, and fabricators. Work sits at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, and fabrication, where conceptual clarity and buildability must coexist.

The studio is typically engaged once architectural intent is established, but before thresholds, circulation, and material systems are fixed. This timing allows sculptural work to be developed as a coherent part of a building's experience rather than applied afterward.

Case Studies

A selection of built projects and commissioned works where sculpture is integrated into architecture, landscape, and public space.

Reflections and Emmaus Cross
Commissioned across two stages, this project demonstrates how sculptural systems can evolve over time to complete a spatial threshold. Reflections clarified a campus reflection space through material restraint and durability. A later intervention integrated a cross into the building facade.
The Walk
A commissioned sculptural work integrated into the lobby of a new multi-purpose building at Emmaus College. Developed as a linear sequence aligned with circulation, THE WALK uses material progression and spatial rhythm to support movement, reflection, and long-term use.

How Projects Begin

Commissions originate through several pathways: direct engagement by a client or institution, collaboration with an architect or design team, inclusion within a broader development, or invitation through a curated process.

Regardless of entry point, all projects follow a staged framework. Initial engagement focuses on framing intent.

Early conversations typically address:

  • Site conditions and spatial constraints
  • Cultural, institutional, or contextual narratives
  • Patterns of movement and use
  • Requirements for safety, accessibility, and longevity

This framing ensures shared understanding before design direction or cost is discussed.

Collaboration

MARLINSPIKE works alongside architects, engineers, and fabricators as a specialist collaborator rather than a late-stage addition.

Design decisions are informed by structural logic, fabrication constraints, site conditions, and long-term maintenance. This integrated approach supports outcomes that feel resolved, legible, and appropriate to their setting.

Clear decision points are built into the process to confirm direction before scope or cost increases. Each stage concludes with defined outcomes before proceeding to the next.

Alignment

MARLINSPIKE undertakes a limited number of projects at a time to maintain focus and quality.

Projects are best suited where there is:

  • Respect for process
  • Commitment to early clarity
  • Understanding of integration with architecture and site
  • Willingness to engage collaboratively

The studio values clear communication, disciplined timelines, and mutual respect for expertise.

Not all enquiries progress to commission.

Enquiries

Initial enquiries are most useful when they include:

  • Project context and location
  • Anticipated scale or budget range
  • Timeframe
  • Key stakeholders involved

This allows for an informed conversation about whether the project is an appropriate fit.
